“Friends”

Text: John 15:13,14 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”

Introduction: The ideals people have of friendship many times are taken from the secular world. Millions of people sit down and watch a TV program called Friends. Most people really do not know what real friendship is. The worldly idea of friendship has damaged all of our relationships, especially marriages. Friendship is the most important of all the things, which build solid relationships.

I. Friendship Is Laying Down Your Life, Not Dying.
A. Mat. 16:25 says the same thing. “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
B. The Bible teaches us that we should give up our lives for the sake of another.
C. When we do that we have found the greatest love – friendship!
D. It is losing our desires for another.
E. It is forgetting our happiness for another.
F. Real Friendship is laying down our lives for another!

II. Friendship Is Given, Not Exchanged.
A. The Bible does not tell us that the greatest love is an exchange of one’s life for that of another.
B. It says that we give it with nothing in exchange.
C. You do not win friends, Friends give themselves to you.
D. Mat. 26:50 “And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.”
E. Judas was not the friend of Jesus, yet Jesus called him friend.
F. Jesus was the friend of Judas Iscariot because he gave his life for him.

III. Friendship Is Not A Relationship. It Is The Mortar That Holds all Relationships Together and Without Which All Relationships Will Crumble.
A. Friendship was not given to stand alone.
B. It was given to cement relationships together
C. A husband must lay down his life for his wife.
D. Your greatest friendship should be to your spouse.

IV. When Are You A Friend?
A. Lost and Dying
B. Homeless
C. Helpless

V. Are You Willing To Be A Friend?
A. Regardless of your feelings.
1. Ridiculed
2. Embarrassment
3. Rejected
B. To the undesirable
C. To your neighbor

Conclusion: God wants you to be a friend!!!
