We do a disservice to the Great Commission when we refer to it in the
singular. On at least five occasions in five locations, Jesus gave His
disciples the mandate to evangelize the world.
I. THE POWER OF THE GREAT COMMISSION
A. The power of His strength. "I can do all things through Christ
which strengtheneth me" (Phil. 4:13).
B. The power of His authority. "And Jesus came and spake unto them,
saying, ’All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth’" (Matt.
28:18).
II. THE PURPOSE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION
A. Evangelize the unsaved. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations"
(Matt. 28:19a).
B. Baptize new believers. " . . . baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (Matt. 28:19b).
C. Congregationalize the unchurched. "Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway,
even unto the end of the world. Amen" (Matt. 28:20).
III. THE PLAN OF THE GREAT COMMISSION
A. Go to all nations. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost" (Matt 29:19). "And He said unto them, ’Go ye into all the
world, and preach the gospel to every creature’" (Mark 16:15). "But ye
shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and
ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
