My Help Comes From The Lord!

Text: Psalms 121

Introduction: When things look dreary, like there is no hope, you can call on the Lord, like David.

I. God Is My Helper – v. 1 & 2
A. Heb. 13:6 “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
B. Look Up
C. Look Down
D. Look All Around
E. Webster’s Definition
F. To give assistance or support to
G. To make more pleasant or bearable
H. To be of use to : BENEFIT
I. To further the advancement of : PROMOTE
J. To change for the better

ILL. How my boys use to love to follow me around the yard and try to help me do whatever I was doing at the time.

ILL. In water-safety courses a cardinal rule is never to swim out to a drowning man and try to help him as long as he’s thrashing around. To do so is basically to commit suicide. As long as a drowning man thinks he can help himself, he’s dangerous to anyone who tries to help him. The reason why is because his tendency is to grab the one trying to help him and the result is he ends up taking them both under the water in the process.
The correct way to rescue someone who’s drowning is to stay far enough away to where he can’t grab you. And then you wait. And when he finally gives up and quits thrashing around, you make your move. At that point the drowning man won’t work against you. Instead he’ll let you help him.
The same principle applies in our relationship with God. Until we give up, we aren’t really in a position to be helped. Have you given up ownership of your life to the Holy Spirit who wants to live within you? Because until then you can’t experience His power.

II. God Is My Keeper – v.3, 4, 5
A. shaòmar - shaw-mar'
B. To hedge about (as with thorns), that is, guard;
generally to protect, attend to,
C. God protects us from evil
D. He will not let you loose your foot hold. —The foundation, God’s infinite power and goodness, on which we stand, cannot be moved. When you stand on this basis, your foot cannot be moved.
E. Steadfast and Sure
F. Feet Planted On The Rock
ILL. EDWARD MOTE GREW UP IN THE 1800’S. HIS PARENTS OWNED AND OPERATED A PUB IN ENGLAND. HE GREW UP NEVER KNOWING THERE WAS A GOD.
AS A YOUNG MAN HE TOOK A JOB AS A CABINETMAKER. HIS BOSS A STRONG CHRISTIAN LED HIM TO JESUS. LATER IN HIS LIFE EDWARD MOTE BEGAN TO WRITE HYMNS. ONE I AM SURE YOU KNOW IS “THE SOLID ROCK”
LISTEN TO THE WORDS... MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS THAN JESUS BLOOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS; I DARE NOT TRUST THE SWEETEST FRAME, BUT WHOLLY LEAN ON JESUS NAME.
ON CHRIST, THE SOLID ROCK I STAND; ALL OTHER GROUND IS SINKING SAND.

G. God Is Always There For Us
H. He Is Our Shade In The Unbearable Deserts of Life
I. Webster’s Definition
J. To watch over and defend
K. Keep and eye on or watch
ILL. When we had goats we feed them, wormed them, protected them, trimmed their hooves for them, and provided shelter for them. We milked them and delivered their babies.

III. God Is My Preserver – v. 7 & 8
A. 2 Tim. 4:8 “And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
B. From Evil or the Evil One
C. Eternal Soul
D. No Matter Where We Are
E. Webster’s Definition
F. To keep safe from injury, harm, or destruction
G. To keep alive, intact, or free from decay
H. To keep or save from decomposition
I. To keep up and reserve for personal or special use

Conclusion: God wants you to put your trust in His care. Not your own. Let Him HELP you, Let Him KEEP you, Let HIM Preserve you!

PRAYING THE 23rd PSALM

Because Thou art my Shepherd, I commit my needs to Thee.
Provide green pastures for me to lie in, Lead me beside still waters.
Restore my soul when I’m empty, Lead me in right paths for Your name’s sake.
Be with me in danger when I walk, Through the valley of the shadow of death.
Deliver me from evil, And protect me with Your rod and staff.
Prepare a table to feed me, So my enemies can see Your provision.
Anoint me with the oil of Your healing, Let me drink from the full cup of Your provision.
Surely goodness and mercy will always follow me, And I will live with You forever.
