HOW TO BE HUNGRY
Text: 1 PETER 2:1-3
Have you ever wondered why more people are not hungry for the Word of
God? Why don't they enjoy diving into God's Word every moment they
can? To be hungry for the Word, there is something we must first do:
"laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies,
and all evil speakings," (vs.1) We must make a complete break with
sin.
1. LAYING ASIDE: Greek = past;
once and for all; a complete action; Not something that we do over and
over again... "Having then layed aside..." Until a person has made a
complete break with sin in his life, a person cannot expect to have a
hunger in his heart for the Word of God. The reason for this is that
he has filled his heart with the food of the world, and this not only
destroys his appetite, but perverts his taste buds. Here is the reason
why so many of God's children have so little hunger for the Word of
God.
2. GUILE: means to "catch with
bait." We are not to be crafty, sly, underhanded persons, but live
above board; open, sincere. Treat others fairly: "above reproach."
3. HYPOCRITES: One who
impersonates another. We are not to pretend that we are someone we are
not (that's what gets us into trouble) but we should allow the Holy
Spirit to live out His life in us.
4. ENVIES: Always wanting what you
can't have.
5. EVIL SPEAKINGS: Speaking down
to another person; to slander him; to talk about him behind his back;
to complain.
6. NEW BORN BABIES: the idea: just
as newborn babies desire milk (naturally) you should desire the Word.
For that is your food. In fact, the word desire is emphatic, which
means that it should be an intense desire.
7. SINCERE: Unadulterated or pure.
The Word of God is not like worldly teachings; the desire is not to be
for watered down or perverted theology, but the intense desire to
really know the Word.
8. GROW: make spiritual progress.
9. GRACIOUS: excellent; in view of
the fact that you have tasted of the Lord, and found Him excellent.
Sin in our life destroys our appetite for the Word of God; when it is
gone, the normal things are an intense hunger for the Word. When we
feed our souls on the Word, we make spiritual progress.
