Put On Christ
Text: Gal. 3:26-29
Introduction: If you are a child of God this morning then we are told
to put on Christ. This is not referring to putting on a mask when we
come to church on Sunday. Or putting clothes or a costume on. It is
not referring a temporary change in our attitude or actions. These are
some things that are done on a regular basis by people everyday. Some
of you know people who are like that.
I. Prerequisite – Must be a child of God –
v.26
A. By faith only
B. Faith is a loose word that we use generally speaking. It takes
faith to get married because marriage vows are basically promises. It
takes faith to send children off to school. It takes faith to get a
prescription filled. It takes faith to eat in a restaurant, deposit
money in a bank, sign a contract, drive on the highway, or get on an
airplane or an elevator. Faith isn't some kind of religious experience
for the elite; it's the glue that helps hold people's lives together.
But remember, faith is only as good as its object. If we trust people,
we get what people can do; if we trust money, we get what money can
do; if we trust ourselves, we get what we can do; if we trust God, we
get what God can do.
C. Faith is described in Heb. 11:1 Now faith is the substance of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
D. substance—The Greek word for this (hypostasis—that which gives
reality, or “confidence” Things are made real by faith—which is to say
that faith gives us the confidence that the things we have hoped for
will be realized. evidence—The Greek word here (elenchos) means
“proof.” of things not seen—They are invisible because they are going
to happen in the future.
E. Faith comes by hearing the word of God.
1. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the
word of God.
Ill. A twelve-year-old boy became a Christian during a revival. The
next week at school his friends questioned him about the experience.
"Did you see a vision?" asked one friend. "Did you hear God speak?"
asked another. The youngster answered no to all these questions.
"Well, how did you know you were saved?" they asked. The boy searched
for an answer and finally he said, "It's like when you catch a fish,
you can't see the fish or hear the fish; you just feel him tugging on
your line. I just felt God tugging on my heart."
II. Baptized into Christ – v.27
A. We became members of His body, therefore we shared in His
crucifixion, his burial, his resurrection, and his exaltation.
1. Romans 6:3,4 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into
Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried
with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from
the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in
newness of life.
B. Immersed into Christ
C. Washed by Christ - Cleansed
Little Betsy had faithfully attended baptism classes. Her mother,
wanting to be sure her daughter understood its significance, asked,
"Honey, what does baptism mean?"
"Well, it isn't the water that makes you clean ..." she began.
Smiling, Mother thought, Yes, she understands,
"... it's the soap."
III. One in Christ – v.28
A. Having the mind of Christ – 1Cor. 2:16 “But we have the mind of
Christ.”
1. Through our union with Christ, we have access to Christ’s mind,
Christ’s divine thoughts, Christ’s counsel.
B. Unity
C. Submission
IV. Put on Christ – v.27
A. It’s a way of life – A lifestyle – Permanent
B. It’s a new attitude
C. It’s a devotion or being loyal to a new master
Conclusion: Won’t you put on Christ today. Let His light shine through
you so others can see Christ in you all the time, not just at Church.
