Saved For Sure
Text: 1 John. 5:13,14.
Introduction: John says, "These things have I written.....unto
you....that ye may know that ye have eternal life." God wants His
people to know for sure they are saved and a part of the family of
God.
A Scottish man who was rejoicing in the fact that he knew that he was
saved was once asked by a friend, "But just how do you know you are
saved? You are always talking about knowing for sure you are saved,
but just what makes you sure? How do you know?"
"Well," the old man replied, " I was there when it happened, so I
guess I ought to know." How blessed and wonderful to know that you are
God’s dear child.
There are three things that ought to make us sure that we are birthed
into God’s royal family.
I. His Work For Me Makes Me Sure.
1. I have a settled assurance that I am a child of God. Paul affirms
that Christ died in our place.
2. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom.5:8)
3. It was for "us" that Jesus died on the cross.
4. When you consider the work of Christ on our behalf, you must arrive
with at least three conclusions.
First, His work was an atoning work. Rather than a yearly sacrifice as
in the Old Testament, His atonement was once and for all.
Secondly, His work was an accepted work by the Father. Jesus, knowing
that fact, said upon the cross, "It is finished."
Third, The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is proof that the
Father accepted the sacrifice that the Son of God made, so sinners may
be saved. Gal. 2:20 says He, "Loved me and gave Himself for me."
II. His Work In Me Makes Me Sure.
1. The Bible clearly tells us that the Holy Spirit of God in us bears
witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Rom. 8:16).
2. To "bear witness" means to "testify."
3. The Holy Ghost gives testimony within the believer that he or she
has been born of God.
4. The Spirit of God leads us, teaches us, and seals us.
5. When we are saved, God not only declares us righteous through the
blood of Christ, He also comes to dwell in us through His Spirit.
III. His Word To Me Makes Me Sure.
1. See our text verses. The epistle of John was written that we might
"know" we are saved.
2. John speaks of something greater than mere feelings.
3. You can be saved and not feel like you are redeemed.
4. God cannot lie. If we meet the conditions that God has laid down,
to repent of sin and put our faith in Christ, then you can rest
assured you are born of God.
