The God of Mercy
Text: Luke 18:9 – 14
Intro: Mercy is found 262 times!
God’s Mercy Brings…
I. Salvation – v.14
A. Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but
according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration,
and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
B. Apostle Paul knew that he had obtained mercy
C. Publican received God’s Mercy!
II. Satisfaction – Heb. 4:16 “Let
us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
A. Fills the Void
B. Achievable
C. Reach Out And Receive It!
"Mommy, what does God look like?" asked 5-year-old Timmy. He put down
his peanut butter sandwich & took a big swallow of milk.
"Well, God is a Spirit & we can’t see Him in the same way that we see
people," his mother began, not knowing quite where to go from there.
"But if we can’t see Him, how do we know what He’s like?" he
persisted.
"Well, suppose you were blind," she suggested to Timmy. "Would you be
able to see Daddy, for instance?" He shook his head. "But would you
know what Daddy is like?" He thought for a moment, then vigorously
nodded his head.
"You’d know what Daddy is like by the things he says, wouldn’t you?"
He nodded again. "And we know what God is like, too, by the things He
says in His Word. And you’d know that Daddy loves you, because he
would tell you so & do everything he could for you."
"That’s how we know God loves us, too. He tells us so, & He has given
us so much to help us have a wonderful life. But most of all, He gave
us Jesus to take away our sins & to show us what God is really like."
"And even though you couldn’t see Daddy - if you were blind - you
could hear his voice & feel when he is near. And in the same way,
through Jesus we can hear God’s voice & feel Him near, too. That’s
why, even though we can’t see God, we can be very certain what He is
like."
Little Timmy picked up his sandwich. "I know," he exclaimed, "We don’t
see God outside. We see Him inside." Timmy’s right, isn’t he?...
III. Stamina – 2 Cor. 4:1
“Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we
faint not;”
A. Keep On Keeping On
B. Finish the Race
C. Moving Forward
One day Henry Ford was driving in the Michigan countryside when he
came upon a man whose Model T had broken down. The guy was bent under
the hood trying to figure what was wrong. Mr. Ford stopped and asked
if he could take a look. In a few minutes, he had the car running. The
grateful owner said, “I’m amazed at your ability; you fixed my car so
easily.” Ford replied, “I ought to be able to fix it, because I’m the
one who designed it.” The same is true with God—He designed us, and He
can fix whatever’s wrong with us.
IV. Justice – Rom. 3:23 “For all
have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
A. We deserve to be punished for our sins.
B. God Is A Just God, But He Is Merciful.
C. God cannot allow a person who rejects Jesus into heaven because God
is just and the way God’s justice is satisfied is by accepting Jesus
as our Lord and Savior.
Conclusion: If you love someone, won’t you show them mercy when they
need it? God loves us so He shows us mercy.
