The Joy of
Fellowship
Text: Philippians 1:1-11
Jesus Wants Us To Be Full of Joy - John 15:11 “These things have I
spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy
might be full.”
The Psalmist Wrote Concerning Joy - Psalm 5:11 “But let all those that
put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because
thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in
thee.”
There Are Five Things That Were The Cause of Paul’s Joy!
1. Paul knew his position was in Chrsit (v 1, 8, 13, 20, 21, 26).
2. Paul had a passion that could not be quinched (v 18).
3. Paul had a purpose that was higher than any other (v 17, 21).
4. Paul saw his service & suffering for Christ as a privilage (v 29).
5. Paul was focused on a greater prospect (v 23, 6, 10).
Three Divisions To This Chapter Is Revealed Through The Word “Gospel”:
These divisions reveal Paul’s primary focus in life!
1. The Fellowship of the Gospel (1:5).
2. The Furtherance of the Gospel (1:12).
3. The Faith of the Gospel (1:27).
Three Thoughts That Describe True Fellowship: Paul’s focus on the
gospel created in him a true concern for others.
1. I have you in my mind (1:3).
2. I have you on my heart (1:7).
3. I have you in my prayers (1:9).
The First Several Verses of This Chapter Reveals The Things That Make
“The Joy of Fellowship” possible.
I. REMEMBERING THE GOOD
(v.3). “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,..”
Paul had much to remember about the church at Philippi (Acts 16). The
Macedonian Call (v. 6-11), They met Lydia (v. 12-15), The Demonized
woman (v. 16-18), Their imprisonment (v. 19-24), The conversion of the
Jailer (v. 25-34).
Paul remembered the good and the bad - Romans 8:28“And we know that
all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who
are the called according to his purpose.”
II. GRATITUDE TOWARD GOD
(v. 3). “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,..”
Paul’s memory of Philippi did not always bring back fond thoughts of
good times yet he expressed gratitude - “..we glory in tribulations
also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience,
experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because
the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which
is given unto us.” Romans 5:3-5
Gratitude Is Lacking In Christianity Today!
III. INTERCESSION FOR OTHERS
(v. 4) “Always in every prayer of mine for
you all making request with joy,..”
Supplication = humble and earnest entreaty.
1 Peter 5:5-7“..be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud,
and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the
mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all
your care upon him; for he careth for you.” Luke 18:1-8
IV. PARTNERSHIP IN MINISTRY
(v. 5) “For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until
now;”
Fellowship [koinonia] = fellowship, association, community, communion,
joint participation.
We have a common salvation, a common task, a common peril, a common
saviour.
Matthew 18:18-20“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on
earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth
shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you
shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it
shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two
or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of
them.”
James 5:16“ Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for
another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a
righteous man availeth much.”
We need to work together!
V. CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST
(v. 6-7) “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun
a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Even
as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in
my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and
confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers
of my grace.”
2Timothy 1:12 “For the which cause I also suffer these things:
nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am
persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him
against that day.”
Heb 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he
that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder
of them that diligently seek him.”
VI. LOVE OF GOD’S WORD
(v. 9) “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more
in knowledge and in all judgment;”
