KJV Sermon Outlines
Ere the Lamp of
God Went Out in the Temple
Text: 1 Samuel 3:1-4
Introduction:
A. Spiritually times were hard in the land of Israel.
1. The sins of the sons of Eli. (1 Sam. 2:22-24)
2. The Word of the Lord was precious (rare) in those days.
3. A careless and complacent attitude prevailed.
B. The lamp of God was to burn always. (Exodus 27:20-21) And thou
shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil
olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always. 21In the
tabernacle of the congregation without the veil, which is before the
testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning
before the LORD: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations
on the behalf of the children of Israel.
C. But the lamp went out. There was no light!
D. This is a message for our time.
I. The Church is to be a Lighthouse in a Dark
and Sinful World.
(Matthew 5:14-15) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on
an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it
under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all
that are in the house.
A. Not our business to entertain folks.
B. Not our business to campaign for political parties or candidates.
C. Not our business to march in protests.
D. Our business is to bear witness of the Light.
E. John 1:6-9 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The
same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men
through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to
bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth
every man that cometh into the world.
II. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that Light! (2 Corinthians 4:3-5)
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4In whom
the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe
not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image
of God, should shine unto them. 5For we preach not ourselves, but
Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. We
don't hear the term "lost" mentioned much in sermons these days. Jesus
told about the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son in Luke 15.
A. Men are lost in sin! Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God;
III. What will happen if our Light goes out?
A. Men will not hear the gospel message.
B. Sinners will perish. (John 3:18-19 He that believeth on him is not
condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he
hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And
this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men
loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
C. Their blood will be on our hands. (Ezekiel 33:8) When I say unto
the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not
speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in
his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
IV. Sinner, come to Christ right now and be
saved! The Saviour is waiting. The Lord wants to save you.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men
count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any
should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
A. The universal invitation.
B. The Lord is knocking Rev. 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and
knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to
him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
C. Come now! (Isaiah 1:18) Come now, and let us reason together, saith
the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as
snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
