Disposable People

Text: Luke 15:1 – 7 “Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. 3And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”

We are living in a day and age when everything is disposable. We have disposable cups, plates, forks, spoons, knives, tablecloths, diapers, razors, cameras, and sometimes disposable kids, parents, family members, friends, and people. When you buy something that is disposable you usually end up throwing it away when you are through with it. Sometime people throw away friendships and marriages. The Bible tells us this morning that there is no such thing as disposable people.

Webster’s definition of disposable is: Designed to be disposed of after use: disposable diapers; disposable razors.

Illustration: As a boy, a preacher worked summers on his aunt and uncle's pig farm. Every week, he pumped out the sewage pit running the length of the pig barn with the "honey wagon". One particular day, he backed up to the barn and pushed the suction hose between the large grates and into the liquid "soup" below.

Hearing squealing, he ran inside and jumped over the pen to where he had slid the hose down, and looked down to find that a pig had fallen into the "soup"!

He yelled across the yard for someone to "Get his uncle!" He ran back into the barn, grabbed one of the grates over the sewage pit and swung down into the mess below. The liquid was well over his waist! The startled pig started a frantic swim for the far end with him pursuing. At the end of the pit he grabbed him by the ears and started his journey back to the open grate above. His uncle lowered a ladder, and I grabbed the slippery pig around his belly and lifted. Part way up the ladder, he kicked up a fight, and they both fell backwards under the surface. Sputtering and exasperated, He grabbed the pig and this time got him high enough so his uncle could grab him and pull him out. He was greeted with howls of laughter for his lifeguard efforts as he stood under outside and got hosed down in his "birthday suit" to get cleaned off. His clothes were ruined and had to be buried.

III. Rejoice! V. 6
A. Result of Your Efforts.
B. Consequence of Your Actions.
C. The Effect of Cause.
D. Celebrate!
